The push to onshore American manufacturing activities is growing and there is a wealth of government support behind the effort. If you are a U.S.-based manufacturer, there are numerous opportunities for funding, technical assistance, and collaborative development available to you.
There are several Manufacturing Institutes located around the country that provide support for manufacturers in different technology areas:
- Advanced Functional Fabrics of America (AFFOA), Cambridge, MA: turning traditional fabrics into highly sophisticated, integrated networked devices and systems;
- American Institute for Manufacturing Integrated Photonics (AIM Photonics), Albany, NY: developing novel integrated photonics such as multi-project wafer and process design kits;
- America Makes, Youngstown, OH (Managed by the National Center for Defense Manufacturing and Machining): pioneering novel processes in additive manufacturing and 3D printing;
- Advanced Robotics for Manufacturing (ARM), Pittsburgh, PA: deploying advanced robotic technology through development of sensors, software, materials, human and machine behavior modeling, and more;
- BioFabUSA, Manchester, NH: developing innovative cell and tissue culture processes by integrating automation, robotics, biofabrication, and analytical technologies;
- Bioindustrial Manufacturing and Design Ecosystem (BioMADE), St. Paul, MN: working to build a sustainable, domestic end-to-end bioindustrial manufacturing ecosystem;
- CESMII – the Smart Manufacturing Institute, Los Angeles, CA: accelerating smart manufacturing through the integration of advanced sensors, data, platforms, and controls;
- The Cybersecurity Manufacturing Innovation Institute (CyManII), San Antonio, TX: providing cybersecure energy-ROI for energy efficient manufacturing and supply chains;
- Electrified Processes for Industrial Excellence (EPIXC), Tempe, AZ: developing and scaling hybrid electric heating concepts to support industrial process heating needs;
- El Paso Makes, El Paso, TX (Managed by the National Center for Defense Manufacturing and Machining): strengthening the national defense industrial base through workforce development, educational initiatives, and business engagement;
- The Institute for Advanced Composites Manufacturing Innovation (IACMI), Knoxville, TN: accelerating development and adoption of cutting-edge manufacturing technologies for advanced polymer composites;
- The National Advanced Materials and Manufacturing Innovation Institute (LIFT), Detroit, MI: developing and deploying advanced lightweight materials manufacturing technologies;
- Manufacturing times Digital (MxD), Chicago, IL: equipping factories with digital tools, cybersecurity, and workforce expertise;
- NextFlex, San Jose, CA: furthering development and adoption of flexible hybrid electronics;
- The National Institute for Innovation in Manufacturing Biopharmaceuticals (NIIMBL), Newark, DE: enabling more efficient and flexible manufacturing for biopharmaceuticals;
- PowerAmerica, Raleigh, NC: accelerating the adoption of advanced semiconductor components;
- Rapid Advancement in Process Intensification Deployment Institute (RAPID), New York, NY: focusing on new chemical and material processing technologies to improve efficiency;
- REMADE, Rochester, NY: focusing on driving down the cost of technologies to reuse, recycle, and remanufacture materials including metals, fibers, polymers, and electronic waste;
- Semiconductor Manufacturing and Advanced Research with Twins (SMART USA), Durham, NC: developing and validating the use of digital twins to improve domestic semiconductor manufacturing.
Manufacturing institutes provide grant and accelerator opportunities, technical assistance and access to equipment and facilities, and even career training for employees. These institutes serve as a critical intersection for technology exchange among universities, research institutes, commercial entities, and government agencies to accelerate the deployment of advanced manufacturing solutions.
