After spending several hours trying to trouble-shoot the MFA protocols for Research.gov over the weekend, I finally figured out the issue. On October 27th, Research.gov began requiring phishing-resistant MFA for Authorized Organizational Representatives (AORs). Currently, the only option for this enhanced MFA is creation of a passkey. The passkey requires Near Field Communications (NFC) between a mobile device and your computer, placed in close proximity, and requires the use of a USB Yubikey or similar to provide this communication link. Thankfully, I have two days left before having to submit a slew of SBIR grants for the Nov. 6th deadline and my nearby Staples has Yubikeys in stock. However, Research.gov could have saved a lot of people a lot of headaches by providing a few sentences of additional guidance. The Help Desk folks are always quite nice and I hope NSF is providing adequate compensation of the abuse they are going to have to deal with!
